WHAT TO DO IF YOU ENCOUNTER A SHADY MOVER

  1. Recognize the warning signs
  2. Know and understand your rights as a consumer

The two most common warning signs include, the movers demanding payment before the work is completed, and, producing a bill which is significantly higher than the original estimate.

Know that there are laws in place to protect you should you encounter this type of fraud. These laws, however, must be implemented carefully. You must first refuse to cooperate with any stipulation that lies outside the agreement, as originally stated in the contract. Secondly, explain to the movers that in order to change a contract, notice must be served on both parties, and failure to do so is prohibited by law. And since no such notice exists, that you are paying under duress. Finally, file a complaint immediately with the Consumer Protection Branch.
